”I always want to see more ladies in the backcountry” – Stephanie about XX Camp 2017

12791023_976133722435055_2825507847384535238_n

What is your thoughts about the XX Camp 2017?
Ohhh am I pumped up for this year’s XX Camp 2017. I KNOW this will be the best camp yet and that is our goal, every year to make it better and more exciting, 2017 Camp will not disappoint!

This year you will bring two additional coaches, what is your comment about that?
These two rad ladies I am bringing with me to Sweden are incredible coaches, riders, friends and have an energy level and love for snowmobiling that never ends. I am beyond excited to see what we all bring to Camp together.

Have the three of you worked together earlier?
Yes, Nadine and I have coached together before and it’s a very GOOD combination. Shelley and I have ridden together before and she is one energized rider and exceptional coach. These girls are so well known and loved in Canada and North America, they are by far my two top female riders ever.

XX Freeride Camp is more popular than ever, how come?
So many girls are getting into the sport of snowmobiling and want to progress and get better. Girls love to come together and push themselves. I think Erika, Caroline and myself along with everyone else that helps in a huge way put out a camp that is second to no one and we strive every year to make it better for the riders. We have every detail looked after and offer a world class camp. We are real girls who love snowmobiling and love to help other girls who want to gain more knowledge.

What sled do you have this season?
2017 Ski-Doo Gen4 850 165, whooo hoooo!

What is your thoughts about the new Summit 850?
I am in love with this sled. Every year these sleds begin to feel more and more like moto (bikes) and this Gen4 is insane.

Why is it so important to encourage women in sledding?
I always want to see more ladies in the backcountry. I want to be available to help any of those ladies that want to learn and get out of their comfort zone. Ladies learn differently than men. It’s encouraging to girls to see other girls in the industry and riding well and pushing themselves. It’s also important to let girls know that the actual RIDING is the most important part. Not the pictures or instant gratification of likes on Instagram or Facebook. I want girls to ride because they love it and that’s it, not for what they can get out of it in regards to popularity. Become an amazing rider and love what you do, it’s snowmobiling and it’s supposed to be all about fun. There is no gender barrier anymore in my opinion, but there are still lots of women who think they can’t do things on sleds like the guys can, yes we absolutely can. I get so excited when any rider is having a great day on the snow but an even BETTER day when I see it’s another girl. My heart is happy and full.

12801409_976131695768591_662912906174183874_n

It is many girl clinics available right now, why, in your opinion, should girls choose XX Freeriders event?
Like I have always said, XX Freeriders always puts out a world class Camp or Event. Erika and Caroline have worked very hard to grow XX Freeriders. We make sure everyone is looked after, learning and comfortable and having a blast! Our support staff on and off snow is second to no one. The amount of coaches and assistant coaches is the highest you will see in a camp. The details such as meals, rooms, lunches on the mountain, after riding fun are amazing BUT the actual CAMP and on snow is world class. We want everyone to learn as much as possible and create amazing friends along the way. That’s why we have such a huge return rate of guests.

Can you tell us a little bit about the DSG clinics that is a big part of your season?
Yes, for the past 3 years I have been putting on camps in the U.S.A as well as Canada for DSG (Divas SnowGear) an all women outerwear/clothing company for women who snowmobile. We have 4 clinics preseason and enjoy getting women off the trail and into the backcountry at all skill levels. Amazing times and amazing girls having a blast learning skills. I have my own clinics and camps as well that keep me busy the rest of the season, Mountain Labs & Camps.

What is your best memory from the past XX Camps?
Oh, this is a hard question because there have been SO many great memories. The riding of course, the smiles on the girls faces when they learn something they have wanted to. After camp dinners and getting to know the girls who come to camp and the friendships that have followed now for the last four years. I cannot forget these two girls, ERIKA and CAROLINE and how they have become my family and brought me into theirs. It was a life changing experience for me the first year of XX Freeride Camp and I couldn’t be more proud of what we have created!

12813935_976131519101942_1747229396898086840_n

What are you most looking forward to in this year’s XX Camp?
Seeing everyone, meeting the new girls coming to camp, the addition of Nadine and Shelley and what they bring to Camp. The whole event is so exciting!!

What would you say to all the girls that did not have a ticket for this year?
This breaks my heart because I want everyone to get a ticket but it isn’t possible. We want you all to try again and don’t give up. We have no intentions of ending this camp and it will be around for years. We will also do our part to figure out if we can allow more in coming years. Thank you for the interest and overwhelming booking times….we are blessed to have so many girls want to spend time at XX Freeriders Camp.

See yo soon, In my heaven it snows <3

XX Freeride Camp 2015

During the period February 10 to 15, the activity level was high at Saxnäsgården when XX Freeride Camp was arranged  for the second year in a row. A snowmobile event – for girls only. On site there were 60 participants and Stephanie Schwartz from Revelstoke, Canada made a comeback and as last year she spread inspiration and happiness around the girls.

The two X stands for the female chromosomes and is also our, Erika Lindblad and Caroline Ohlsson’s hallmark. The goal for the XX Freeride Camp was,and is, to increase interest in freeriding around women  and the goal is far above reached.  Stephanie agrees.

– I want to get these girls so excited about snowmobiling and progression in the sport. To see the excitement of the girls makes my heart happy. There is such a difference with the girls attending camp, they are so willing to learn and. XX Camp has blown my mind with the interest and excitement, says Stephanie Schwartz about the XX Freeride camp.

Last year’s XX Camp was a story of success, especially since Stephanie visited and was such a great coach. She basically showed the girls how to become a better freerider and impressed us all with her teaching skills. This year was no exception, rather the contrary, the interest in participating at the event increased markedly.  Last year XX Freeride Camp had forty participants and for this year it has grown even more to sixty girls.

XX Freeride Camp 2015 was fully booked within 4 minutes.

– We are overjoyed about the interest in XX Freeride Camp, but also generally in the industry, since we started XX Freeriders last year, several other girl camps has been organized showing that our vision to spread happiness and self-confidence among girls that have a passion for sledding has succeeded, says Caroline Ohlsson.

Like last year, there were two Camps from Tuesday to Sunday. This year’s news was that both occasions were divided into a beginner’s course and a more advanced. Between February 10 and 12 we held the beginner camp.  The camp was directed to the girls who wanted to try freeriding for the first time. At Camp 2, February 12 to 15 it was more focus on technical riding for girls with a bit more experience.

The camp attracted participants from Kiruna in the north to Stockholm in the south, as well as participants from near and far, including Svalbard in Norway and Rovaniemi in Finland. That the reputation of XX Freeride Camp spread throughout Scandinavia and even received great attention in the North America is amazing.

During the days the attendants were divided into small groups and Stephanie rotated between them to be able to coach girls based on their individual level. The girls did a great job since the soft powder was all gone. For example, one exercise in Camp 1 was to pow carve between sticks.  Most beginners are good at pow carving towards one direction, but is more difficult to control the opposite. The same goes for the girls in the advanced group, most of them can sidehill in one direction better than the another, therefore we practiced the ”uncomfortable” way too, explains Stephanie.

We think it’s important to work on improvements but still have fun while out riding. Everyone was excited and helped each other – it was definitely teambuilding.

IMG_4908

Teambuilding on high level! – Photo: Joakim kostet

One of the best part’s with the XX Camp is that it is so much more than just sledding – it engages people with the same interest, which later on becomes friends for life. Mingle, dinners, sledquiz, bath, sauna, goodie bags, pool parties and XX missions made the experience epic.

– Everyone was excited when they left. That makes us more than happy and gives a lot of energy to start plan for upcoming events. It is so impressive with all the colorful snowmobiles, matching outfits and the passion that exists for the sport. Girlpower is for sure a good word to describe XX Freeriders, says Erika Lindblad.

But still, besides all the fun things we put safety first. In the introduction to both Camps a brief safety session was held. We showed a movie about avalanche safety and Stephanie went through all the gear in a complete avalanche equipment.

BRP Sweden also offered the girls test drives of 2015’s models of Ski-Doo & Lynx on site.

– It’s always fun to test drive ”for real” and during a whole day, otherwise it is difficult to know which machine that works best for you and your type of riding, says Åsa Eriksson, participants from Umeå that took the change to test drive a 2015

Ski-doo Summit 163″ T3″.

XX Freeride Camp is not totally free of Y-chromosomes. We have the best XX Crew of guys that help us make it possible. The  XX Crew consists of a film crew, a photographer and six guys who support and share their skills on the sleds. We totally agree upon the thought that the best training will always be when you are out driving together with people who inspires your and are able to teach, whether it’s a brother, boyfriend, friend, father or another female freerider.

XX Crew - Photo: Joakim Kostet

XX Crew – Photo: Joakim Kostet

– We are surprised about what a huge thing XX Freeriders become since last year. We are also so proud of the events that we organize since the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. When girls leaving with a smile and wishes to sign up for next year’s event already, then we know that we are making it right and that gives us the drive to be ”back in business” season after season, says Erika and Caroline.

XX Women’s International Freeride Camp 2014 – a great success!

The professional backcountry freerider Stephanie Schwartz from Revelstoke, Canada, has a far-reaching impact in the world of female snowmobile riders. Spreading her skill and positive, upbeat attitude over the ocean, Schwartz was inspiring girl riders at the XX Women’s International Freeride Camp in Sweden this season.

The XX Freeride Camp is a women’s snowmobile clinic for all female riders out there. The aim was to teach women to progress their skills at snowmobiling in a fun and safe setting – but still take them out of their comfort zone in an easygoing way to encourage women within the world of sledding. For all participants it was a unique opportunity to develop their shredding skills and encourage each other to improve.

–          Basically, the most important thing is that each and every one felt that they advanced to their own ”next level”, said the organizers Erika Lindblad and Caroline Ohlsson.

The clinic was held in Saxnäs located in South Lapland, nearby the town Vilhelmina. Ladies arrived from all parts of Sweden, Norway and even from Switzerland, all of them super pumped for the weekend ahead of them. Arrival evening started with goodie bag give away and a nice dinner together at the Mountain Lodge, followed by two full days out in the backcountry with free lunch. The main focus was pow carving, uphill and downhill turning, tree riding, how to get unstuck and sidehilling. Also, Stephanie spoke a lot about technical tip and avalanche safety.

XX-Freeriders_2014_@Joakim-Kostet_131

Three advice from the coach;

– Relax and breathe, make sure to have the right snowmobile that works for you and your body type, and practice, practice, practice. Give it time and be dedicated just like any other sport. There are going to be challenges – but embrace them and never give up Stephanie stated on her Ski-doo Summit XM.

XXFreeride_JohanHisved_148

The girls really appreciated the relaxed learning atmosphere on the snowmobile; with no pressure what so ever. Watching each other push their limits made many ladies try out stuff they wouldn’t have done by them self – the mountain around Saxnäs definitely became a stunning playground. The mantra throughout the whole event was that sledding is about having fun together, wanting each other to succeed shredding that wicked line or doing that turn – nevertheless enjoy the time on the sled.

Happy hearts between all the stucks, try’s and smiles
The camp was designed in a way that allowed the girls to boost their confidence and refine current skills – and so they did! The difference between the first and second day were just mind-blowing. Day two everyone started out with more confidence and really knew what they wanted to work on. All of a sudden, after doing some backcountry tech talks the girls were all killing it in the deep pow. Everyone showed an amazing courage, learned new skills and improved tenfold!

XX-Freeriders_2014_@Joakim-Kostet_078

Also, the attendants had the possibility to try out 2014 Ski-doo and Lynx models from the deep snow segment – arranged by the local Ski-doo dealership Lindblads Motors and BRP Sweden – and let us tell you, this was a real hit! The girls ended up being so stoked after experienced the Ski-doo Summit XM and Lynx Boondocker, so they ride the BRP products all day.

XX-Freeriders_2014_@Joakim-Kostet_163
Tanja Nordfjell

Happy and with soar arms after way too much ski-pulling and digging, a hot tub and warm sauna was more than welcome when the riders returned with big smiles on their faces. Afterwards, dinner was arranged and prices was handed-out to “best equipment”, “best try” etc. Also, giving some shout-outs to the guys in the “XX-camp crew” that helped out during the days made the evening epic.

There’s a reason that it’s two X
If you give it a though, you might figure out that the two X in “XX” stands for the female chromosomes. Not surprisingly, there are two spirits behind the event, which means it’s another good reason to put two X in XX Freeriders. The organizers Erika Lindblad and Caroline Ohlsson are both basically grown up on BRP products.

Erika’s family is running a Ski-doo dealership, ‘Lindblads Motor’, established since 1967, and Caroline is working for BRP Sweden, which means that the BRP playground is a natural part of their day-to-day life. A clear pattern is that these girls’ lifes revolve around the snowmobile industry, so they are really doing what they love, for sure. Having people doing what they love always have great outcomes – so did this camp since the attendants were stoked when leaving and many already signed up for next year.

–  We are amazed of all positive feedback received after the event. A huge thank you to all of the powerful girls that rides and to Stephanie who is a wonderful role model within this sport. The three of us were the perfect match to pull this thing together for the first time. Right now our hearts are full of sled-happiness and we can’t wait to do this again next year, Caroline and Erika stated.

XXFreeride_JohanHisved_129
Caroline and Erika

Schwartz and her world of sledding
Stephanie started riding snowmobiles at the age of 5. Being from one of the most popular snowmobile destinations in the world means that she is lucky to have that area as her “backyard”. But, it doesn’t mean that she don’t enjoying to ride in other places, happily she loves to travel and have ridden a lot both in the US and Canada.

Any of those days when the sun is out and blue bird skies and deep snow appears she totally loves being on her Ski-Doo Summit XM. However, in her opinion it’s the people she rides with that makes the day’s epic. A big part of her work life is to helping coach ladies clinics in BC.

–    It’s hard to really put into words the experience and joy of my trip to Sweden for XX Women’s International Freeride Camps. So much to be thankful for and amazing new friends and memories are made. My heart is full and I can’t wait to come back  My cheeks are sore from smiling and laughing soooooooo muchCan’t wait to come back – Stephanie

XX-Freeriders_2014_@Joakim-Kostet_216

More popular than expected
The first thought was one Camp with 12 participants, but, due to growing demands in the market, the organizers decided to include 20 ladies and run two Camps. Camp 1 took place during Wednesday to Friday, Camp 2 during Friday to Sunday. Still, the girls were split up with a maximum of six riders in each group out riding, which gave them the possibility to having one on one time with Steph rather than staying as a whole. They really appreciated it when she came up to and told them what she noticed about their riding and gave advices. This means that the personal needs certainly was center of attention.

XX-Freeriders_2014_@Joakim-Kostet_266

Still, this couldn’t been done without all the ladies that signed up for the clinic, and the support from all sponsors. The main partner backing up the event were BRP Sweden and Lindblads Motor (local dealership, Vilhelmina). Other sponsors; HMK, Ruco Sweden, The Betties, Octane Jane Store, Marsfjall Mountain Lodge and SCS Unlimited.

XX-Freeriders_2014_@Joakim-Kostet_198

The event proved a great success, providing a terrific opportunity to encourage female riders within the world of sledding – with a sparkling BRP atmosphere all around.
